A couple or a year ago, a song by “Five For Fighting” caught my attention about song titles not mentioned at all in the song lyrics. And since that time, I have noted as I chance upon them, songs in my playlist (definitely a fave) and in the back of my mind, I always ask, what could be the artist’s reason not mentioning the song title in the lyrics? Researching about these songs, I found out that even though the title is not mentioned in the lyrics, it was “in” there, really. In some instances, no reason at all…”wala lang”.
Among my musical history “New Order”, as I gather is the most noted for this. Their Discography even have just a few songs with the title actually found in the lyrics. Meaning most of their songs have title not actually found in the lyrics. Their reason….. “wala lang”, I suppose.
And as I look for other reasons, I found a couple……... (could have been?).
· One is in a song titled “Our lawyers made us change the name of this song so we wouldn't get sued” by an artist by the name of Fat Out Boy. The legal issues of the business.
· Another is the choice of a song title by the artist such as “My Name Is David Ruffin And These Are My Temptation” or "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" which are close to impossible for them to be included in the lyrics and actually sing.
Oh, whatever their reasons may be, I am just thankful to have heard and appreciated these songs.
Can you identify the song title? I will mention the name of the artist and have dug up their lyrics, post it in full (others, I will cut out the repetitve portion) for the sheer poetry, brilliance or just about anything you can have of it according to your preferences.
The first song is of an artist that could very well be the first to have an influence on me regarding music. Succeeding songs are of no particular order.
Again, if you have the time, kindly post the title in the comment “portion”.

I read the news today oh, boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, i just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure if he was from the house of lords
I saw a film today oh, boy
The english army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But i just had to look
Having read the book
I love to turn you on.
Woke up, got out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, i noticed i was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
Somebody spoke and i went into a dream
I read the news today oh, boy
Four thousand holes in blackburn, lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the albert hall
I'd love to turn you on

I can't stand to fly

I'm just out to find
The better part of me
I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It's not easy to be me
Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I'll never see
It may sound absurd, but don't be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed, but won't you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It's not easy to be me
Up, up and away from me
It's all right You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy, or anything
I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
With clouds between their knees
I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
inside of me ...... inside of me ...(x2)

I'm only a man looking for my dream

Come up to meet ya, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need ya
And tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets, and nurse me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming in tails
Heads on a science apart
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start
I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart.
Questions of science, science and progress
Don't speak as loud as my heart.
Tell me you love me, and come back and haunt me,
Oh, when I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing tails
coming back as we are.
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy.
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start.

25 years and my life is still
trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this
Brotherhood of man
For whatever that means
And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out what's in my head
And I'm, I am feeling a little peculiar
So I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And I say hey....
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey....
I said hey what's goin' on

Say your prayers little one
don't forget, my son
to include everyone
tuck you in, warm within
keep you free from sin
till the sandman he comes
sleep with one eye open
gripping your pillow tight
exit light
enter night
take my hand
off to never never land
something's wrong, shut the light
heavy thoughts tonight
and they aren't of snow white
dreams of war, dreams of liars
dreams of dragon's fire
and of things that will bite
now I lay me down to sleep
pray the lord my soul to keep
if I die before I wake
pray the lord my soul to take
hush little baby, don't say a word
and never mind that noise you heard
it's just the beast under your bed,
in your closet, in your head
exit light
enter night
grain of sand
exit light
enter night
take my hand
we're off to never never land

Dear, I fear we're facing a problem
you love me no longer, I know
and maybe there is nothing
that I can do to make you do
Mama tells me I shouldn't bother
that I ought to stick to another man
a man that surely deserves me
but I think you do!
So I cry and I pray and I beg
Love me love me
say that you love me
Fool me fool me
go on and fool me
Love me love me
pretend that you love me
Leave me leave me
just say that you need me
So I cry and I beg for you to
Love me love me
say that you love me
leave me leave me
just say that you need me
I can't care 'bout anything but you
Lately I have desperately pondered,
spend my nights awake and I wonder
what I could have done in another way
to make you stay
Reasons will not lead to solution
I will end up lost in confusion
I don't care if you really care
as long as you don't go
I can't care 'bout anything but you

And sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies

She came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang heavy in the air.
She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee,
Just as her father came across the sea.
She heard about a place people were smilin',
They spoke about the red man's way, how they loved the land.
And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand or a place to hide.
Down in the crowded bars out for a good time,
Can't wait to tell you all what it's like up there.
And they called it paradise, I don't know why.
Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high.
Then the chilly winds blew down across the desert,
Through the canyons of the coast to the Malibu
Where the pretty people play hungry for power
To light their neon way and give them things to do.
Some rich man came and raped the land, nobody caught 'em,
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes and, Jesus, people bought 'em.
And they called it paradise, the place to be,
They watched the hazy sun sinking in the sea.
You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina
Just like the missionaries did so many years ago.
They even brought a neon sign 'Jesus is Coming',
Brought the white man's burden down, brought the white man's reign.
Who will provide the grand design, what is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier, we have got to make it here.
We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny and in the name of God.
And you can see them there on Sunday morning
Stand up and sing about what it's like up there.
They called it paradise,I don't know why.
You call some place paradise - kiss it goodbye.

Every time I think of you
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue
It's no problem of mine
But it's a problem I find
Living a life that I can't leave behind
But there's no sense in telling me
The wisdom of the fool won't set you free
But that's the way that it goes
And it's what nobody knows
well every day my confusion grows
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can't say
I feel fine and I feel good
I'm feeling like I never should
Whenever I get this way
I just don't know what to say
Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday
I'm not sure what this could mean
I don't think you're what you seem
I do admit to myself
That if I hurt someone else
Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can't say

Yes, it's called love
Oh, it's called love
And it belongs to us

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
That's the way that we must pay
You got my time and you got my money
Now I feel you've started something
In a world that's so becoming
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
When I was a very small boy,
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we must pay
And the value of destiny comes to nothing
I don't notice where we're going
I guess there was just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of destiny
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I think you've started something
In a world that's just begun
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
This have been a lengthy post.
This will need a “part2”.
#2 is called Superman
TumugonBurahin#3 is called Love Song (which i thought was a 311 original)
#4 is called The Scientist
#6 is called What's Up (i think)
#7 is called Enter Sandman
#8 is called Bohemian Rhapsody
#12 is called Iris
#14 is called Superstar
#17 is called Bizzare Love Triangle (?)
hmm. the others aren't that familiar.
anyway, you could look the others' titles up by copy-pasting the lyrics on your search box. :)
*edit: the list doesn't have a #9. :]
The 9 titles that you posted are all correct. Missing pala ang #9 sa list ko. So, 16 lang pala ang total titles. You got 9 out of 16.
TumugonBurahinI tried to edit this post and insert a song for #9 pero hirap i control ng font color so i will leave it as it is.
yung #13 nga di ko rin matanggal yung shade sa font ng artist which should read......

Thanks for being interested with this list. This will definitely have a 2nd part and if you have songs in the same category...titles not in the lyrics, please do share. =)
hehe. i have about ten in my playlist right now.
TumugonBurahini think i'll post something like this on my blog too. :D
(May I make a correction po =)... #17 (16) is not Bizarre Love Triangle, it's #15)
TumugonBurahin#17(16) is True Faith
#16 (15) is Thieves Like Us
#10 is Love Fool
Nice post, bro =)
I never truly like a song until I hear the lyrics. As the character Sophie Fisher said in the movie, "Music and Lyrics":
"A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the two that makes it magical."
Thanks for the correction, sis!
TumugonBurahinAlso, thanks to a group named "Frente!", "New Order" was introduced to a younger generation.
and you got #10 right.
also thank you for sharing a highlight in M&L. Ang galing ng pag relate ni Sophie between a song and the person........review ko nga yang part na yan, =)
So, regarding a person, it is a plus factor that the person have some physical attractiveness, then it follows the get to know stage, the lyrics for it to be truly magical.
That is a reality, which is in turn, the opposite regarding songs kasi sa songs, minsan kung lyrics mo unang titingnan without knowing the melody, on my part, di ko kaagad na appreciate yung song. But when the artist and the melody comes in, then it "hits" me. I don't know if its the same with others, maybe its just me. baka gusto ko lang magdagdag ng comment sa post na ito. pasensya na, is. di ko lang maipaliwanag ng ayos yung gusto kong sabihin relating songs and person.
seriously, thanks for the correction, for Sophie.
and, I'll give away #5......the B-52's...... Legal Tender
for #11 and #13........ parang gusto kong lagyan pa ng kaunting background.
maybe next comment.thnx!
Absolutely entertaining bro.... i'll be waiting for part 2... :)
TumugonBurahinok po, part 2 coming up, pero intay intayin ko lang yun list ni sis Aya, ihalo ko na lang sa supposed part 2 kung aabot.
TumugonBurahinanother giveaway.......
#1, the Beatles' A Day In The Life. And here's a little something about the song.
"A Day in the Life" is one of The Beatles' most influential songs. Paul Grushkin in his book Rockin' Down the Highway: The Cars and People That Made Rock Roll, called the song "one of the most ambitious, influential, and groundbreaking works in pop music history". In "From Craft to Art: Formal Structure in the Music of the Beatles", the song is described thus: "A Day in the Life" is perhaps one of the most important single tracks in the history of rock music; clocking in at only four minutes and forty-five seconds, it must surely be among the shortest epic pieces in rock.
The song appears on many top songs lists. It placed twelfth on CBC's 50 Tracks, the second highest Beatles song on the list after "In My Life". It placed first in Q Magazine's list of the 50 greatest British songs of all time, and was at the top of Mojo Magazine's 101 Greatest Beatles Songs, as decided by a panel of musicians and journalists. "A Day in the Life" was also nominated for a Grammy in 1967 for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist Or Instrumentalist.
On 27 August 1992 Lennon's original handwritten lyrics were sold by the estate of Mal Evans in an auction at Sotheby's London for $100,000 (£56,600). The lyrics were put up for sale again in March 2006 by Bonhams in New York. Sealed bids were opened on 7 March 2006 and offers started at about $2 million.

Although I have said that these are "songs in my playlist, a fave", "I am just thankful to have heard and appreciated these songs".........there is one song here I can live without.....Metallica's Enter Sandman.
TumugonBurahinIt just made the list because it ranked high in the charts.
I cannot add any more answers here.. kasi sinagot na ata lahat =) . I will just wait for the much-anticipated part 2. Sayang eto sana isasagot ko kaso na-giveaway nyo na po eh =)
TumugonBurahin1. A Day In the Life - my dad gave me a CD of Sgt. Pepper back in high school (yes, my dad is cool like that, hehe)... and that was at a time when everyone (including me) were into Milli Vanilli or whatever was on the radio. First time I heard it I thought, "so there are more to the Beatles pala than "She Loves You" etc..." coz prior to hearing Sgt. Pepper, all I know about the Beatles were their 2-minute ditties about young love. And so started my Beatles-phase of musical "discovery" =)
5. Legal Tender - I love this song. The B-52s had a sound which is uniquely theirs: a mix of retro, surf, punk, etc... and I just love guitarist-songwriter Ricky Wilson's style, he was one of the best and most underrated guitarists in my opinion. Only the B-52s could make a song about counterfeiting money sound so much fun.
and I remember the first time I visited your site was when you posted a video of "I am the Walrus". Fab Faux is it?
TumugonBurahinKorek! Legal Tender by B-52's, and thanks for the added info of the song and the band.
TumugonBurahinBut some correction.......
Legal Tender is #11.
.......and everybody haven't identified #5 and #13.
hmm... yung no. 5 sa first line pa lang very familiar sya sa kin, hindi ko lang talaga maisip kung ang title. yung no. 13 naman I have no idea talaga ..
TumugonBurahin#5. I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year) is a top 20 hit by Donald Fagen from his solo debut album, The Nightfly (1982). Donald Jay Fagen is best known as the lead singer and front man of the band Steely Dan .
TumugonBurahinIt is probably best known for the catchy line…….
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free.
#13 Last Resort by Eagles
I think I first hear this song on my 2nd or 3rd year in high school from a nearby jukebox in the favorite “tambayan” during subject breaks or cutting classes hours to put it squarely.
By the title of the song and simply knowing at that time that the Eagles is just another rock band that have disbanded, I thought the song was just a farewell song about their decision to disband,....last album as a group, last track of the album.....The Last Resort being a figure of speech.
But asking the Eagles, here’s what they have to say about the song……
"The Last Resort” was the final track from the Eagles' fifth album Hotel California, which was a critical success and a major commercial hit. Since its release in late 1976, it has sold over 16 million copies in the U.S. alone. The album was at #1 for eight weeks in early 1977 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This song was about the demise of society and Glenn Frey explained……… “It was the first time that Don took it upon himself to write an epic story and we were already starting to worry about the environment...we're constantly screwing up paradise and that was the point of the song and that at some point there is going to be no more new frontiers. I mean we're putting junk, er, garbage into space now.”
This song is one of the greatest rock songs ever written on the strength of its powerful lyrics. Don Henley introduces the song on Hell Freezes Over……. “You've heard of how the west was one, well this is sort of about how the west was lost."
I think their use of “Jesus” and “God” in the song is worthy of the sentiments they are expressing. And that makes this one a gem of a song.
And in the course of composing this comment, I just realized something about artists in general and their works. Hmmmmmmm….
