Amidst Disasters and Political Strife: World-wide Congregation Celebrates

This is a perfect timing for a world-wide Congregation to give thanks after a wave of disasters and political strife struck different parts of the world.

As early as the second week of March, tens of thousands of worshippers marched to the ADD Convention Center in Pampanga, Philippines. Delegates throughout and outside the country arrived in throngs, while coordinating centers in five other continents have also readied their places to accommodate the attendees.

The Members Church of God International is celebrating its International Thanksgiving to God for the first quarter of this year from March 25 to 27, singing praises, offering thanksgiving, and studying of God’s word.

This first quarter thanksgiving is significant for the Congregation for many reasons. MCGI had vigorously widened its broadcast mileage in the past three months, specifically to include Bolivia, Argentina, Portugal, Uruguay, and India in its evangelization efforts. The latter two already have established coordinating centers in response to the growing number of brethren an interested people. More centers are expected to be set up soon.

The increase in membership in the West was hastened by the 24/7 broadcasts over Latin-American televisions and Bible Expositions held in various places. Inquiries about the doctrines of the Church multiplied in a few months. Bro. Eli Soriano, presiding minister to MCGI, said of this in his sermon as “quenching spiritual thirst in the West.”

Bro. Eli also thinks of these evangelization developments as the “realization of the Church’s responsibility to show and share the light and knowledge that God gave [us].” Even with persistent censures and criticisms, MCGI continues to broadcast the Gospel, and in doing so, Bro. Eli said, “We feel humbled that we have become instruments in making the truth we have learned known to every place we go.”

The continuous preaching added 4,107 new members for the first quarter. This number includes a majority of Filipinos, Papua New Guineans, Indians, Africans, and Latinos.

Another celebrated achievement of the Church is the institution of the synchronized worldwide prayer on March 6. Members pray together in MCGI chapters worldwide at an agreed time, 10 p.m. in the Philippines via satellite and Internet facilities.

Some great reward.

The time I spend alone has nothing to give.
The life I lead alone has nowhere to live. >K. Harland

I was feeling low these past couple of weeks, about the  day to day concern that I felt I have not dealt with  as I thought I could have.

But yesterday, I was lifted up.

Instead of riding the jeep through the hi-way, I chose to pass by the Town proper and walk. On the way up the bridge, a tricycle had difficulty getting past the bridge that it needed a push that I incidentally could provide because I was the one nearest the vehicle.

So, push I did. The driver said thanks and I hitch a ride with it up to the corner of the street. Some great reward.

At the store by the corner of the street, I bought one big banana for seven pesos. So the fare that I was to pay the jeepney driver was used to buy a banana that as I later realized became a proof that shows my belief in the recent scientific finding that fruits are best eaten on an empty stomach.

As simple as that, I was lifted up and all those troubles and feeling low were all gone.

And as simple as that, we got to realized not to take things for granted and to give thanks to Whom thanksgiving is due.

Saturday, 2nd day of the 2nd month 2008 - Gregorian calendar.

Their business is in the line of construction, the other is on maintenance of a Beach Resort. They present themselves as one on-stage to do a song and dance number. His pitch maybe off key, his dance steps maybe out off sync with the rest of the group but he is giving his all. He is offering thanksgiving.

Another group came from area 3&4 North of Manila. She stands out among the youth lined up in front. To her left is a boy not more than 15 years old. To her right is a girl of about 20. Maybe the two are her grandchildren and she’s a standout among the youth in front because she is in her 80s. Aside from her age, she is a standout because her movement was a little step late though it is visible in her that her joy is not a bit diminished. She is offering thanksgiving.

They are offering thanksgiving, that’s what matter most!
